Festivities on the College Avenue campus celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Rutgers University–New Brunswick Class of 1974, as well as the classes of 1959, 1964, and 1969.

Soon after the Rutgers Glee club performed Rutgers traditional songs, including “The Bells Must Ring” for alumni gathered on the lawn, Class of 1974 alumnus William Fernekes climbed the stairs inside Old Queens to ring the bell that Colonel Henry Rutgers donated to the university in 1826.

He said ringing the iconic bell felt “terrific, because of our heritage here. My wife, Sheila, and I met at Rutgers.”

Sheila, who graduated from Rutgers College in 1976, joined him in Old Queens. They met on campus in 1972, and have been married for 48 years.

The Fernekes, who live in Flemington, were among 85 alumni who attended the annual Reunion on Friday, which included a presentation by the Rutgers Oral History Archives, a luncheon that included Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway and Rutgers University Alumni Association (RUAA) Chair Gloria Vanderham, tours of campus, and a reception.
