From football field to advertising’s top seat, Alexander Kroll’s innovative leadership at Young and Rubicam revolutionized global marketing

Retired chair and CEO of Young and Rubicam, Inc., Alexander S. Kroll helped triple corporate ad billings and directed the creation of a global corporate network for the nation’s largest employee-owned marketing communications company. A Henry Rutgers Scholar and All-American football player, he played one year with the New York Titans (now the New York Jets) before joining Young and Rubicam as a copywriter. He was named executive vice president and worldwide creative director at age 33, the youngest person to attain that position in any agency. He was named president and COO in 1982. In addition to his 32 years at Young and Rubicam, he is a past chair of the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the Advertising Council. Kroll is also a two-time winner of the Kodak All-American award, first for his exploits at Rutgers as captain of the undefeated 1961 football team and again for “outstanding personal and professional achievement.” He was inducted into the Rutgers Football Hall of Fame, the national College Football Hall of Fame, and the American Advertising Federation’s Hall of Fame.
