From trucking to triumph—Arthur M. Goldberg turned business ventures into industry giants and guided countless companies to success
Arthur M. Goldberg was known for his ability to successfully manage a variety of business establishments. He got his start after graduating from law school, when he joined his father’s small trucking business, Transco, and developed it into one of the largest in the country before selling it for a tremendous profit. He went on to chair Triangle Industries, a major cable and vending machine manufacturer, and to head International Controls Corporation, a leading defense contractor and producer of truck-trailers. On his way up the ladder, he chaired both Bally Total Fitness Holding Corp. and DiGiorgio Company, a major food distributor. He directed Hilton Hotels Corporation and First Union Corporation, then the nation’s fourth largest bank. He is credited with rescuing Bally Entertainment Corporation from the brink of bankruptcy and growing it into a successful major business enterprise. He ultimately reached the position of president and CEO of Park Place Entertainment Corporation, which owns or manages numerous gaming properties operating under the Bally’s, Caesars, Flamingo, Grand, and Hilton brand names. Goldberg died in 2000.
