Business Executive
A visionary leader in telecommunications and education, James G. Cullen’s work has shaped both industries and futures
James G. Cullen, one of the nation’s foremost experts on telecommunications policy and regulatory affairs, has extensive expertise in corporate planning, network operations, business systems, marketing, and regulatory affairs. He joined New Jersey Bell in 1964, eventually rising to director for corporate planning at AT&T, then president of Bell Atlantic Enterprises, New Jersey Bell, and the Bell Atlantic Corporation. He retired as Bell Atlantic president and CEO in 2000 after playing a leading role in its successful mergers with both GTE and NYNEX, which led to the creation of Verizon. Throughout his career, Cullen has been dedicated to Rutgers and to public education. He was co-chair of Governor Jim Florio’s New Jersey Quality Education Commission, and he chaired the national steering committee for the Rutgers Campaign: Creating the Future Today—which raised $615 million when it concluded in June 2004, 23 percent more than its goal. In addition to serving on the boards of Johnson & Johnson, Prudential, and Agilent, he has been a member of the executive committee of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and a trustee of the Newark Museum.
