Thomas A. Renyi

Thomas A. Renyi is a hands-on manager, a visionary, and an effective leader in challenging times. Those qualities may explain his success as chair and CEO of The Bank of New York Company. After the 2007 merger with Mellon Financial Corp., he became executive chair of The Bank of New York Mellon. Renyi is credited with the company’s consistent increase in profits and its transformation from a traditional commercial bank to a global financial services company. He joined the bank’s management development program in 1971 after serving as a first lieutenant in military intelligence with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. In 1992, he was elected president and a director of the company, and vice chair and a director of the bank. He was appointed CEO of the bank in 1996 and of the company in 1997, and chair in 1998. A member of the university’s Board of Trustees and Rutgers Business School’s Board of Advisers, he is a past member of both the Board of Governors and the Rutgers University Foundation Board of Overseers. Many other organizations have benefited from his leadership and service, including the New York Botanical Garden, Lincoln Center, PSEG, The Clearing House, World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, and United Way of New York City.
